What was the highlight of The Tokyo Station Hotel
Generally great, but breakfast service needs improvement
Welcoming staff were super attentive. We arrived at the hotel very early, so left our bags at concierge first before check in. While we were standing outside contemplating our next move, staff came out with umbrellas. We didn’t ask for it and I felt it was very thoughtful of them. When we came back later for check in, they had already moved our baggage to the rooms for us. They have lights that run the length of the corridor for every door, and I really liked how the different coloured lamps signified different lift lobbies; clever touch. Rooms and facilities are clean and well-maintained. Gym was small but equipment new (brand: Life Fitness), and place was very clean. The on-site trainer is very attentive and diligent. If you didn't bring workout clothes you can even rent it for a small fee. Breakfast spread was good. Even though the variety is not as much as other 5 star establishments, they made up for it with the quality of the offerings. Most things are labelled organic, food was pre-portioned so you could try a bit of everything, and it all tasted excellent. I especially loved the freshly cut honeydew and rockmelon, all the Japanese food, and the omelette station. The chefs on site made excellent truffle omelettes and shrimp omelettes. My one regret is I didn’t take more time exploring the hotel and all it had to offer! If you stay here, take some time to roam a bit and utilize the facilities.
At the breakfast buffet, staff were slow to clear empty plates from tables. It got to a point where I had to stack my own plates, walk towards the back, and place it somewhere; self-service of this level is highly unusual for Japan let alone a 5star hotel. One of the chefs saw me and told me I could leave the plates on a side table. After that, I thought service might improve, but they were still slow. I could see few people moving between tables not really doing anything, and it was not easy to get staff attention where I was seated. I’m not sure if this was a tactic to make guests consume less or more slowly, but I assume the faster tables are cleared, the quicker the turn over? Towards the end of the breakfast hour, there were still people waiting to be seated. I only had the breakfast for one day, but if I had it for the entirety of my stay and the service was like this every day, I would give a lower rating for staff.
